Paint Normal/Bump Detail on a low poly (vertex weighted) model and bake in the info so it will work correctly with smart materials etc.
0:00 Setup weighted normals in 3DsMax. You no longer need a script for this. It is is available through the Modifier Stack.

10:23 Stamp Normal Details.
15:29 Bake Normal Information down. As an alternative you could use Anchor points.
