The Synthetic Media Revolution After COVID-19 from an AI Perspective

We can now move faces and voices in the same way that we move bits of information. Deep Learning is enabling the next revolution in content creation allowing people to clone their likeness (voice, face, characteristics) and create entirely new digital representations of themselves. Synthetic (AI) Media will enable scalability, unprecedented levels of real-time interactivity, localization and a new white space of engagement for brands and influencers. Yet this begs several questions: What is the value of a face? Or a recognizable voice? Or a whole personality? Brands spend billions of dollars on celebrity endorsements, influencer marketing and more to reach valuable customers. What then of highly realistic synthetic faces and voices that can be instantly created, conveniently modified, cloned, rented or sold? How do we assign and apportion value to this novel data-set? What pitfalls lie ahead as we embrace this technology? In our present lockdown circumstances, how can Synthetic Media serve the better angels of our nature as humans seek connection, creativity and catharsis in a time of crisis.
