How to pass your OSCEs from a current lecturer and examiner!

Sometimes the crux of the consultation lies in the patient's ICE= Ideas (what they think is going on/what's causing their symptoms), Concerns (what are they worried about, has their friend been recently diagnosed with a serious condition?) and Expectations (what do they want to achieve today, do they want a blood test or reassurance?).

However, typical mistakes I see that will cost you severely are:

1. Not asking about the patient's ICE at all.
2. Asking some of ICE i.e., asking only about their concerns and not their ideas or expectations.
3. Assuming you know what their ICE is.
4. Asking about ICE when the patient has mentioned it already. i.e., they've literally started the consultation with their ICE.

Mistakes happen because we are nervous but the good news is that you can prevent and rectify them. The key to a passing is practicing and having a system that works for you!
