Corenda Lee’s Story of Intergenerational Trauma | Mind Games
Corenda Lee suffers from an extremely traumatic past, including intergenerational trauma and the loss of her father to suicide. Featured in Mind Games, Corenda’s story sheds light on her struggle with Canada’s Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program for Indigenous peoples. As a member of the Lake Cree Nation, she recalls a negative experience with an NIHB-assigned therapist whose lack of cultural competence deterred her from therapy for years. After finding an Indigenous therapist who understands her background, Corenda has finally experienced positive support, though NIHB doesn’t cover this care, leaving her to pay out of pocket. She emphasizes the mental health crisis Indigenous communities face, compounded by colonization and a system failing to provide necessary support.
In a two-year investigation TVO, the IJB, and Toronto Star journalists revealed gaps in Canada's Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program for Indigenous peoples. The journalists interviewed over 60 current and former clients, therapists, physicians, and Indigenous mental health advocates, many of whom described a "broken" system that, they claimed, sometimes does more harm than good.
TVO, the IJB and the Toronto Star reached out to Canadian federal officials overseeing the NIHB program. They denied that the system suffers from serious flaws. https://ijb.utoronto.ca/news/indigenous-services-canada-nihb-mental-health-accountability-documents/
