Building the Small “L” in Leadership | Jack McCarthy | TEDxBabsonCollege

Let’s not worry so much about trying to measure up to the big-time “Big L” Leaders we read about in history books and see in the news. Instead, we can focus more on being the best “Small L” everyday leader that we each can be through building habits that matter. Jack McCarthy suggests that we take a Leadership Meta-Competency view, in leveraging our Identity Awareness and Adaptability, to help guide us all toward being better leaders. He uses his story of how he pushed himself into discomfort zones to learn more about how leaders must create spaces in which people (including ourselves!) can grow and thrive as we make our way in the world. Jack McCarthy is a professor in the Management Division at Babson College. He is a senior scholar of leadership and a practitioner of leadership as a former CFO and CEO in industry. Working at Babson brings Jack both great joy and great hope. However, he believes that there is a sense of timeliness in the leadership lessons of today, where we must embrace the intense global connectedness we are experiencing and where the most profound and enduring lessons are ancient and rooted in many spiritual traditions around identity, acceptance, inclusion, and kindness.
