Giant 20' x 20' Overhead Light Bank Assembly

A client called, wanting a 16' x 16' x 16' set photographed. After some discussions, we decided that the best way to light it to look natural would be a huge softbox overhead, lighting everything evenly.

We did extensive research on huge lightbanks and softboxes already being sold, including Matthews and Chimera. While they appear to be very well-made, the price was ultimately the deciding factor. Client simply didn't have the budget for one of those pre-built light banks for this project.

So we did our homework, drew up plans, made several trips to Home Depot, ordered some parts online, and built this 20' x 20' light bank (400 sq ft) for a small fraction of the cost to purchase one ready-made. Total construction time was about 10 hours for one person.

We used six Paul Buff Einstein 640ws strobes, held in place with six Manfrotto Super Clamps.

We are shooting in the enormous Chapman-Leonard studio in Orlando, Florida, with 29' from white floor to ceiling brackets. Final height of the silk is 21' off the ground.

Time lapse video shot with a GoPro Hero 3+, at one frame every five seconds, and played at 24 fps. Actual assembly time, including hoisting, is approximately 2 hours, with 2 people (plus 2 more at the end to pull the chains!)

We learned a lot in the process, made a few mistakes, and next time we'll change a few things, but overall a surprisingly inexpensive and lightweight alternative.

If you are interested in how we built it, watch for the complete blog post soon (link will be added here).
