As 2025 saw new and renewed clashes around the world, one conflict continued to shape the year.

The war in Gaza, which entered its third year in 2025, brought mass death, widespread destruction, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.

The year began with fragile hope. On January 19, a three-phase ceasefire came into force. The first phase, set for 42 days, halted major fighting, enabled a hostage-prisoner exchange, and allowed more humanitarian aid in. Twenty-five Israeli hostages were freed in exchange for around 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.

But the ceasefire never reached a second phase, as core disagreements remained unresolved.
