Which is better for writing a melody or improvising - thinking in terms of keys or in terms of modes?

A mode is a scale that is derived from another scale by changing the tonic note. If we take C Major as an example, we can derived the following modes:
- C Ionian: C D E F G A B C
- D Dorian: D E F G A B C D
- E Phrygian: E F G A B C D E
- F Lydian: F G A B C D E F
- G Mixolydian: G A B C D E F G
- A Aeolian: A B C D E F G A
- B Locrian: B C D E F G A B

There are benefits to each way of thinking. Thinking in terms of keys tends to be simpler when you have a simple chord progression or want to create a simple melody. But when a chord progression becomes more complex or you want to create a more exotic and interesting melody, then thinking in terms of modes may actually be easier.
