The Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore is a fantastic example of baroque architecture built in honour of the Virgin Mary. It's located in Piazza Esquilino not far from Rome's main train station. Since 1990 the site and the other properties of the Vatican outside the state are protected by the Unesco as a worldwide human heritage.
