The Forge: Part 2 - The Burner (Propane)

This is from the build of my forge. This is part two of the build. I used Frosty's instructions for building the T-Burner. I tried to stay as close to the word as possible as that's what he recommends. Hey, who am I to argue with a guy who's been doing this stuff forever. There's a lot of great information on iforgeiron.com including the plans for this burner. It is a heck of a lot to read, and the forge and burner threads are miles long, but the information is very good, so... go read up.

One thing to note: Over time, connections come loose. Make sure that you check your connections regularly. The danger of Propane and propane accessories is NOT something to be taken lightly.

Updated...
The request has been made to post the parts I used.
The Black cast iron T Connection:

3/4 x 6 Pipe Nipple... Note, I could not find these in single units on Amazon. I highly recommend that you don't use this link, and just run to Lowes, or Ace and just buy 1 of them. But, hey, if you don't want to go out... Click away.

Same story for the 3/4 pipe flange. You only need 1, but Amazon only sells a minimum of 10. (Ugh... why?)

Brass Flare 1/4" OD x 1/8" Male NPT

5/16 drill bit. Personally I like the Dewalt Cobalts as I drill a lot of metal, and they have been great.

The Z Burner Flare, I got from Larry Zoeller. These are made by him, and they do a great job!

The black hose and Marshall regulator I also got from Larry. You can find these at:

As to the copper tube part of it, I did this so I had something that would not burn if it came close to the heat of the forge by some misstep. While I do some crazy crap, I don't want to take any chances. I took my Zoller hose parts and visited my local Ace and found a guy who was a guru at this stuff. I don't feel comfortable relaying what he told me being that this is a year later, and I was learning about it while he was explaining it. There's some real oddness in pipe sizes and normal sizes, inner diameters vs outer diameters, flare fittings vs... it goes on and on. So, for fittings and sizes beyond the burner itself, I need to defer to them.
If you do the the extra copper length, you will need a flaring tool

Safety Disclosures: Forging is a wonderful hobby, and I have been enjoying my forge quite a lot, but you need to understand... It's surrounded by danger. Sorry if that sounds like hyperbole, but it is what it is. This video is being posted as a document of my build, and how I chose to go about it. It's not intended as an exact how-to. If you choose to build a forge, you are doing so at your own risk. I can not / will not be held liable for your actions. And while being intentionally and completely repetitious There's a lot of ways these things can hurt you and it's best to be fully aware of what those risks are. Seriously... Go and do some research. Take your time (meaning... don't rush), and use your brain.
