DRC Mine LIVE | Eastern DR Congo: Rubaya Coltan Mine Collapse Kills More Than 200, Say Officials

Deadly landslides have struck the Rubaya coltan mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, killing more than 200 people, according to the North Kivu provincial governor. The landslides hit the M23 militia-held mine in North Kivu province on January 28 and 29, following heavy rainfall, miners said. The governor reported that miners, women, and children were buried alive when large sections of the mine collapsed.

Videos from the site show scavengers shovelling through the vast, mud-covered area. The Rubaya mine produces around 15% of the world’s coltan, a key mineral used in electronics such as smartphones and laptops. The M23 rebel group, which seized control of the mine in 2024, has taken over large parts of resource-rich eastern DRC. The UN has accused Rwanda of using the militia to siphon off Congolese minerals, allegations Kigali denies.
