what do poop and astronomy have in common dung beetles are about to let you know these insects collect animal wastes roll them up into a ball and use it for several purposes they use the bowl as their homes lay their eggs on it or if they're hungry snack on it from time to time now before you throw up in your mouth there's more to these creatures intelligence than the multitude of ways in which they use poop get this dung beetles actually have the incredible ability to roll their dung balls in a straight line even at night intrigued by this fascinating ability a Swedish biologist named Marie Dak decided to conduct a little experiment she placed a few dung beetles in a planetarium and watched as the insects were able to successfully roll their dung ball in a straight line using the starry night skies turns out these smelly little guys looked to the sky just as much as the philosophers of old once did to make things even more interesting the biologists decided to show them only the milky way galaxy and still the dung beetles were capable of rolling their precious dung balls in a straight line so not only are dung beetles excellent recyclers they are incredible astronomers too

while the names of these large wasps alone are enough to keep you up at night they earn their spot in today's video for the incredibly smart and perhaps even more disturbing way in which they lay eggs a tarantula hawk is a spider wasp that preys on tarantulas but instead of feeding on them directly the wasp stings and paralyzes the spiders with its powerful venom once the wasp has immobilized its victim she lays her eggs inside the tarantula's stomach this makes for both a protective nest and a rich food source for the young larva soon to come the spider lives on and once the eggs hatch the larva feed on this spider from the inside for several weeks but it gets even smarter and more disturbing the larvae are already instinctively smart enough to avoid the tarantula's vital organs until they reach maturity this prolongs the spider's life and therefore gives the larva all the food and shelter they need until they're ready to fly off and go on to sting tarantulas of their own and it's no fair fight either if you have trouble believing the great tarantula could lose to a big old wasp get a load of this a scientific survey found that out of 400 battles between tarantulas and tarantula hawks the wasps only lost once

some of you sweet tooth out there would hand bees the smartness award in the blink of an eye alone for the awesome honey they make through pollination but there's a lot more to bees than their busy buzzing around would suggest bees are incredibly interesting due to the fact that they organize into colonies with a strict hierarchy proving they're capable of far more advanced levels of organization than most insects the worker bees and the queen bee are both female but only the queen bee can reproduce meanwhile all drones are male interestingly enough female worker bees clean the hive and collect pollen and nectar to feed the colony while taking care of the offspring too the male drone's only job is to mate with the queen but their organizational skills aren't what landed them on today's list it's their means of communicating with one another which is what's so incredibly fascinating to say the least for example when a worker honeybee locates a rich source of food to make honey she alerts her fellow workers to the location using what's called a waggle dance this zigzagging dance tells the other bees everything from how far away the flower is to which direction the bees need to fly in relationships to the sun to reach the food source these dances are amazingly accurate so next time you're lost ask a beef for directions before plugging an address into google maps
