Let’s talk autism, masking, and beauty 👄

We need to discuss autistic women and masking.

Masking can come in many forms, and one of them is trying to fit into beauty standards and norms.

Many autistic and neurodivergent women feel other, different, and fear the rejection, humiliation, or social isolation that could come if people find out that they are neurodivergent.

So appearing “perfectly beautiful” can often be a way that many women try to mitigate this, often harmfully at their own expense. Autism diagnosis and support for women and girls remains woefully low due to gender bias in medicine, and therefore this can often be an easy harmful coping strategy many women and girls adopt.
