Chukar Chasers: Public Lands, Dirt Roads, and Devil Birds
What began as an early chukar season idea to travel 600 miles into the desert abyss for a three-to-four-day chukar hunt became a reality later in the season. With an abnormal and insubstantial winter, we planned for a last-minute escape, packed the hunting gear, upland vests, shotguns & shells (extras of course), camping gear, the wall tent & stove, and loaded the precious cargo–the hunting dogs: Ace, a Llewellin Setter (the “Englishman”), Jacques, a Braque Français (aka “Jack”), and Rye, a German Shorthaired Pointer (the “German”). We drove into unfamiliar terrain utilizing offline hunting navigation, as well as the old Road and Rec maps that don't ever leave the trucks and that have countless, handwritten chukar spots marked with notes and arrows leading into "No Name" canyons, in search of wild devil birds.
For three consecutive days, the gun dogs hunted chukar, displayed steady points, and thankfully held the elusive chukar to give us a chance; and, if we were lucky enough to connect, the bird dogs retrieved to hand (well, not every time). In venturing deep into our public lands, we found untouched chukar hills, undisturbed wild chukar, and made some unforgettable memories chasing wild birds–an epic trip to say the least. So long as our public lands remain accessible, use them, respect them, take care of them, and continue to explore new Chukar Country.
Special thanks to Crispi US for keeping our feet comfortable and dry throughout the chukar season.
