Scottish independence movement must offer alternative to gloomy vision of Rishi Sunak and Keir Starm

The change in the calendar is always a good opportunity for reflection and making plans for the year ahead. New year's resolutions can inspire us to take up a new hobby, improve skills, or simply take a fresh look at the world.  Back in the world of politics, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer were quick to tell us all about their plans for 2023 – but unfortunately it’s very much 'back tae auld claes and parritch'.  Rishi Sunak was flogging his five-point plan, claiming he will reduce inflation, reduce the national debt and grow the economy, while clamping down on vulnerable immigrants and magicking away NHS waiting lists.  As Chancellor, Sunak was a master of deflection and misdirection; it seems he isn’t making any resolutions to change as Prime Minister.  Setting up moving targets which are never going to be met, and pandering to anti-immigrant views rather than facing up to the damage being wreaked by Brexit is bang on form.  The reality is that inflation is not in Sunak’s control, and the Bank of England is struggling to get it back on track. Under the UK Tory Government, the economy is the worst performing in the OECD except for Russia.  There is still a danger that the energy contracts which companies have been forced to sign up to will push them over the edge when limited UK Government support ends in a few month's time.  And instead of negotiating to bring about a fair pay deal for striking workers, the Tories want to further restrict people’s right to strike. A further round of austerity to meet Sunak’s debt target will only make things worse.  So what does Labour’s Keir Starmer have to offer by way of hope?  A speech full of woolly platitudes, lacking in practical solutions. No commitment to reverse the Tories austerity politics which have damaged the economy and stymied growth, full throated support of Brexit which is causing the UK to be so much worse off than comparable countries.  Starmer identifies that the Westminster system is broken, dresses it up in the clothes of "taking back control" but doesn’t permit Scotland the right to address these same issues by means of a referendum on independence.  Change, but only the change Labour decides Scotland can have. This is undemocratic, and fails to recognise the wishes of many Scots, including Labour voters.  In 2023, the independence movement must resolve to set out the clear alternatives to the gloomy visions set out by Sunak and Starmer. Further decline, more austerity, with Brexit acting as a drag on our future, or an independent, fairer, greener, more prosperous Scotland, taking our place in the world. Scottish politics Tory attempts to privatise Channel 4 were wrong-headed  I was relieved to see that the UK Tory Government had abandoned their petty, politically-motivated plans to privatise Channel 4.  The previous DCMS Secretary of State Nadine Dorries had a clear vendetta against Channel 4, apparently stemming from her experience in a reality tv show back in 2010.  Former Prim
