Tascam 388, 424, 414 // Portastudio Shootout
I compare 4 track cassette recorders Portastudio 424, Portastudio 414, Tascam m30 w/ Yamaha MT44, and Tascam 388 Studio 8 in the ultimate shootout between analog home recording machines. If you're serious about home studios, tape hiss, saturation, and punchy warm beats, then you have entered the correct domain. Those unworthy will perish.
Can you tell the difference? Tell me in the comments which is your fav!

I am not a scientist. Nor am I an electrician. I'm hardly a musician. I'm just a person in a barn building a home recording studio. And I simply like torturing myself with unnecessary tests in my quest for the best worst sounding analog sounds. If you can understand this sentiment, then this is wonderful news. We've found one another.
I learned some things for sure. For instance, my tascam 424 and 414 sound completely different to me.
I'll try not to write too much of my own opinion, but I just want to point out a couple things. Once again this is not a perfect test. The idea was to send the same signal (one song) to all these different machines to hear their characteristics. Some of these machines benefit from a hi end boost, some don't need it (as you might hear). Some of these recorders like a hotter signal. Some run at a lower tape speed. Some of these cut out lot's of low end from the get go, and you can't get it back in. Depending on your application, you might prefer one of these machines to another. I notice a slight warble on the mt44 which I think is a defect, but I absolutely love that sound. (That machine was free by the way: https://youtu.be/O98hypdSJpM).
This was a little test I was going to do anyhow. I tried to balance the levels a little to make it a fair fight.
I'd love to hear your thoughts :)
