In this video, Ben Newhouse identifies and elaborates on seven business tips for composers. The first is to identify your target client, which basically means that you need to find the type of client who would be interested in your service. The second tip is to identify your product and service and then work with the client and their presented budget. Tip number three is to circulate, which means spending time with your target client and also going to events where you can meet more prospective clients. Another tip is asking, “what music do you need for your next project?” This helps you identify a prospective client and it shifts the conversation to the most useful information for you as the composer! Tip number 5 is to get credit for the work you are doing: this is pretty self-explanatory! Tip number 6 is “make it once, sell it multiple times.” This can help you earn more money (and more exposure) because you can make one piece of music and then license it and multiple clients can use it in multiple projects. Tip number 7 is to keep your costs low. This makes sense because royalty payments can take a long time to show up for a completed project, and the industry is unpredictable.
