How to Deadlift for Beginners
A quick overview of how to deadlift for beginners:
Step up to the barbell and place your feet hip-width apart, toes facing forward
Place your feet under the bar, so that when you look down the bar is across the middle of your foot
Engage your core, take a breath in and roll your shoulders back and down
Keeping your back straight, bend at the knees so you lower down (similar to a squat) and grab hold of the bar as I have done in the video
(This is an over / over grip and is perfect to begin with)
Keeping your back straight at all times, you are now going to stand up and straighten your body as you breath out
Keep the barbell close to you and when the bar has just passed your knees a good cue to think of is now sending your hips forward and then squeezing your glutes at the top of the movement to straight up
You shouldn't be shrugging the weight up with your shoulders - your arms and hands should simply be acting as 'hooks' on the barbell
To lower back down, send your hips back and at the same time start to bend your knees
Remember to keep the barbell close to your body and, you guessed it, your shoulders back and your back straight
Work on your form before going up in weight and although it's nice and sunny on my roof in Peru, please don't actually deadlift on a tiled floor ;)
