Fumio Kishida, minister for foreign affairs of Japan, has worked closely with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to shape a global and comprehensive approach to Japanese diplomacy. During his two years in office, Mr. Kishida has visited 46 countries and has sought to expand and deepen Japan’s cooperation with European partners such as the European Union, NATO, the OSCE, and individual European states on key matters of economic and security policy. In his keynote address, Mr. Kishida outlines the priorities and road ahead for the Japan-Europe relationship in 2015.
Since being elected to the House of Representatives in 1993, Mr. Kishida has held significant positions in both the government and in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Mr. Kishida served as the parliamentary senior vice minister for education, culture and sports, science and technology in the Koizumi cabinet; minister of state for special missions, including Okinawa and northern territories affairs and regulatory reform in the first Abe cabinet; and chairman of the LDP’s Diet Affairs Committee. He was appointed as the minister for foreign affairs of Japan in the second Abe cabinet and in December 2014, he was reappointed to the same post in the third Abe cabinet.
Marc Leland is the co-chairman of the German Marshall Fund. He has been the president of Marc E. Leland & Associates, an investment advisory firm, since 1984, and has served as the assistant secretary of the treasury for international affairs, senior advisor to the Mutual Balanced Force Reduction Negotiations in Vienna, Austria, and general counsel of the Peace Corps. He has served on many corporate and non-profit boards and has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and the Visiting Committee to the Kennedy School at Harvard University.
