Safety, first and last, is our priority. Every year,nearly 20 people are killed and up to 50 injured in accidents at level crossings nationwide - simply because road users fil to follow simple safety rules. British Transport Police figures show that every day throughout Britain hundreds of motorists are gambling with their lives at level crossings in a mad race against time.

This video graphically illustrates the shocking consequences of what can happen when just one driver ignores the red warning lights at a level crossing. "Red Runner" mark the climax of Operation Zebra, a high-profile safety campaign at targeted crossings in the North East which led to 1000 motorists being prosecuted.

The Campaign - bearing the hard-hitting message - bearing the hard-hitting message - "Ignore the red - you could end up dead" - high-lighted the dangers of level crossing abuse to millions of people. But the repeated antics of motorists mean that Railtrack, in partnership with the British Transport Police, will continue to tackle level crossing abuse nationwide.
