Renewal of OPG licence: President Velshi underscores importance of transparency
During the Commission hearing on the application from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for a 10-year renewal of its Darlington Waste Management Facility licence, President Rumina Velshi spoke about a change of terminology on OPG’s website from “nuclear waste” to “sustainability services.” She echoed intervenors’ concerns about how this makes it very challenging for the public to navigate the website and readily access waste information, and underscored how transparency, openness, and plain-language communication are imperative to enhance public confidence. Licensees are required to have robust public information programs to effectively communicate about nuclear facilities and activities.
