Improve the Video from the Nintendo 64 Using Voultar's RGB Mod Kit & HD Retrovision Component Cables

In this video, we show you how to RGB Mod a Nintendo N64 using Voultar's Mod Shop RGB Mod Kit for the N64 and HD Retrovision Component Video Cables.

NOTE:
This tutorial shows how to install the Voultar RGB Mod Kit into a Nintendo 64. I am not liable if you damage your console if you do not follow these instructions or don't have the soldering skills to install the system. When in doubt, pay a qualified installer to perform the modification if you do not have the proper skills or tools.

The N64 has long had a soft spot in my heart, from some of my favorite Mario and Star Wars games to some of the best wrestling games ever produced. The N64, however, has not aged well in terms of the visuals delivered. From crappy composite video as the top video output from stock hardware, anti-aliasing, blurring and more the N64 is just a hot mess. Thankfully renowned modder Voultar as an RGB mod kit you can install into your system to make it possible to connect to your modern TV via HD Retrovision's Component Video Cables or SCART via Framemeister or OSSC.

Installation of the kit was easy FOR ME, someone who has soldered various electronics for over 25-years. This is not a simple solder job as you are working with some extremely small components and you can totally damage and ruin your system.

Once I had everything installed and buttoned back up I connected the HD Retrovision Cables to my OSSC and hit the power switch. WOW, what a difference. The colors were so much more vibrant, the pixels were really sharp and overall this is the best my N64 Games had ever looked.

From the first game I played, I didn't feel any lag or latency running through the Mod Chip. I ended up using a 3X upscale setting for my OSSC with Scanlines to reduce some of the "Jaggies" I was seeing without scanlines. While I am not normally a fan of Scanlines they did help soften the edges more.

Why it RoX:
- Reasonable Price
- Relatively easy to install (with proper soldering skills)
- Great color palette
- Works with HD Retrovision cables or SCART

What could be improved?
- I wish the wires were provided (or available for purchase)
- Not a miracle worker, you're still dealing with Anti-Aliasing & Blurring
- While easy for me to install you can RUIN your N64 if your soldering skills aren't up-to-par.

Should You Buy One?
If you have soldering skills and don't want to drop almost 4-times as much for the Ultra-HDMI Mod Kit this is a decent solution for the money. For under $100 with the HD Retrovision Cables & Voultar RGB Mod Kit you can dramatically improve the visuals on your N64.
