Steam in China 2003 - The Zhung Dong Railway - Revised and extended

The city of Zhungeer is situated about 120 km south of Hohhot, in the Province of Inner Mongolia. The railway was opened for public freight service on December 16th, 2000. It runs over 72 km from Zhungeer to the coal mines at Xiyingzi.
Unlike the Ji Tong Railway with the famous Jing Peng Pass, the Zhungdong Railway was rarely visited by enthusiasts. Partly because it was difficult to reach filming positions and because the line only remained steam operated for four years before electrification and for stills photographers was blighted by electrification masts.
The line passes spectacular scenery on the Loess mountain plateaux. It has to pass two summit tunnels, 29 bridges and several well engineered deep cuttings. Only the section between the loco depot at Zhungeer and the crossing point at Fuxincheng was visited.
