S01E03 - The Great Gate | Internet Gateway & Route Tables Explained
The districts are designed. The city makes sense on paper. But Gerald's shop has no customers. The Inner Sanctum is invisible. And nobody can get in or out.
The problem is not the structure — it is the missing connection.
Lady Nettia builds the Great Gate of Cloudoria: a single entrance that opens the Market District to the World Road. But the gate alone changes nothing. Merchants still cannot find it. Messages still have no direction.
The real solution is the Road Signs — rules planted at every intersection that tell every traveler, every message, and every delivery exactly where to go.
This is how AWS works too.
The Internet Gateway is the door between your VPC and the public internet. But it does nothing on its own. The Route Table is what activates it — a single rule that says: send all outbound traffic to the gateway. Add that rule to a subnet, and the subnet becomes public. Remove it, and the subnet disappears from the internet entirely.
The key insight:
A subnet is not public because of a setting. It is public because of a route. One line in a Route Table is the difference between visible and invisible.
Understand this, and you understand how every AWS architecture controls what the world can and cannot see.
