Ratnagiri Monastic Complex

Ratnagiri, located in present-day Odisha, was one of the major Buddhist centres of eastern India between the 5th and 13th centuries CE. Flourishing under the Gupta period and later regional dynasties such as the Bhaumakaras and Somavamshis, it formed part of the renowned “Diamond Triangle” alongside Udayagiri and Lalitgiri — a concentrated network of monasteries and sacred sites dedicated to advanced Buddhist learning.

The complex includes large brick monasteries (viharas), elaborately carved stone doorways, a central mahastupa, and hundreds of votive stupas. These clustered stupas were devotional offerings, raised by monks, pilgrims, or patrons in acts of merit. The sculpted figures found throughout the site — including Bodhisattvas and esoteric deities — reflect Ratnagiri’s strong association with Mahayana and later Vajrayana (Tantric) Buddhism, marking it as a significant centre of ritual and scholastic activity.

Excavations in the 20th century uncovered terracotta seals bearing monastic names, bronze icons, and inscriptions that reveal an intellectually active community connected to wider Buddhist networks across eastern India and beyond.
