ABOUT PROFESSOR JANE REEVES
Professor Reeves is Co-Director of the Centre for Child Protection at the University of Kent’s School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research and also Director of Studies for the blended learning Master’s course in Advanced Child Protection.
Professor Reeves has worked at the University of Kent since 2011 and has a background in social work with young people in care, particularly young parents who were in care themselves or whose children have safeguarding concerns, experience that is reflected in Professor Reeves’ teaching and research. Since coming to the University of Kent, Professor Reeves has had the opportunity to lead, with Professor David Shemmings, the development of the Child Protection Centre.

The Centre is focused on developing research and writing highly innovative and research informed training tools which can be used by a variety of professionals involved in child protection. The first, a ‘serious training game’, gives professionals the opportunity to practice and reflect on the skills, emotions and risks associated with ‘front-door’ child protection work and to appreciate a case from different professional perspectives. ‘Rosie 2’ is focused on the chronic neglect in a long-term case.

Professor Reeves also helped to develop the innovative blended learning Advanced Child Protection Master’s course. This course provides the opportunity for all professionals involved in child protection to view the topic from a 360 degree perspective with both academic and practitioner viewpoints. It brings together in one place the perspectives and experiences of children, families, social workers, health visitors and the police on the causes and implications of all aspects of the child protection process.

Professor Reeves’ research interests range across the field of child welfare but have been particularly focused in recent times on young families and the perspectives of young mothers and young fathers. She edited an inter-professional book on perspectives on young fathers in 2009. She is currently working, with colleagues from the University of Kent’s School of Psychology, on the evaluation of serious training games using sophisticated eye tracker technology to interpret the effectiveness of the tool and to enhance future developments in training games.
