Diamond Face-Off Cushion VS Radiant Cut Diamonds: IGTV Series
Cushion and radiant cut diamonds have been two of the most popular center-stone cuts for engagement rings in 2020. While these diamonds differ in their appearance and shape, they both offer some unique characteristics that make them desirable for an engagement ring center-piece. In this video we go over some different aspects of both radiant and cushion cut diamonds to give you some more insight into what to look for when shopping for your diamond
To start we talk about the cuts of each stone. For both radiant and cushion cut diamonds, there are variations within the shape and different faceting patterns available. At Lauren B, we focus on the more 'brilliant' style which has longer facets on the pavilion (bottom half) of the diamond. This helps create both a more defined sparkle and larger face-up dimensions; two factors that will maximize the beauty of these diamonds.
Next we talk about the ratios of these stones i.e how square or long each stone looks. The ratio of a diamond is found by taking its length measurements and dividing it by its width. For cushion cuts we offer anywhere that is perfectly square at 1:1 up to around 1.2:1 for a more elongated look. A very common ratio is approximately 1.1:1 which gives you an elongated, yet fuller appearance. Radiant cuts do come in square varieties but here we focus on the elongated version; for this we usually find that anywhere from 1.2:1 up to 1.4:1 is most popular.
The main difference between these two shapes is there outline; cushions have soft edges and rounded corners while radiant cuts have parallel sides and cut corners. Radiant cuts will also be cut longer (as mentioned above in the ratios section) while cushions have a fuller appearance. As far as sparkle goes, radiants can exhibit more fire and brilliance due to its more symmetrical appearance.
Finally, we end this video with some different ring designs to consider for either shape. At Lauren B we can custom make any design with any shape or size center-stone so if you see a ring design on our website with a radiant cut center, we can just as easily create it for a cushion cut center.
