Babaji and His Kriya Yoga Lineage [Simply Explained in 12 Minutes]

Babaji and his kriya yoga lineage date back 2,000 years. I’m talking about Mahavatar Babaji, the one and original ascended master that has been on this earth for over two thousand years. He has initiated a small group of people that have gone on to influence many more to be kriya yoga practitioners, with the ultimate goal of reaching samadhi. Babaji has promised to remain in his physical body, always visible to at least a few persons around the earth. This was foretold in the book Autobiography of a Yogi, where Babaji made a promise to his sister Mataji to remain in his body forever. His exact words were ‘Be it so, I shall never leave my physical body. It will always remain visible to at least a small number of people on this earth. The Lord has spoken his own wish through your lips.’

Babaji has said that kriya yoga, a particular spiritual path that incorporates several different yoga techniques, was taught by Krishna to Arjuna and that Patanjali and Jesus knew of it as well. In the book, Babaji and the 18 Siddha Kriya Yoga Tradition, the author M Govindan writes that Babaji had five main disciples in the last 1200 years, all of whom he had personal contact with. The first one talked about by Govindan is an initiate named Adi Shank-ara-charya, who lived from 788 to 820 AD. This adept preached that the path of the sannyasin, should be one of a renunciant, an ascetic and life-long celibate. He believed the sannyasin’s path should be limited to the few were fit for it. For the vast majority of spiritual people though, being a householder in the material world without attachment and performing ones life work dutifully and skillfully was the ideal. To me, it’s obvious that those who choose to dedicate their lives to the divine and become renunciates are on the fast track to spiritual riches, which is what I believe Shank-ara-charya was getting at.

The next disciple of Babaji was a man named Kabir, who lived from 1407 to 1518 AD. Kabir was a great saint and poet who sought to bring harmony between factional Hindus and Moslems. Kabir preached a monistic conception of God and the avoidance of idol worship. Kabir lived a long life of about 108 years and had many disciples. He insisted on a vegetarian diet, avoidance of intoxicants, and like Shank-ara-charya, an ascetic lifestyle. When Kabir died, Hindus and Muslims fought over his remains at the funeral ceremony, with each group wishing to honor him according to their own customs. When the shroud covering his body was removed, it was discovered that his body had disappeared and in its place was a bed of flowers. The flowers were then divided between the two groups.

The next great disciple of Babaji came over 300 years later and is well known from perhaps the greatest spiritual book of all time, Autobiography of a Yogi. This great master’s name is Lahiri Mahasaya. He lived from the year 1828 to 1895. It is said that Babaji began a new phase in his mission and entrusted Kriya yoga to Lahiri to show that a householder could reach self-realization. Lahiri was married and had a normal job but in his previous lifetimes he had been a disciple of Babaji and renunciate.

There is a famous story in Autobiography of a Yogi, where Babaji summons Lahiri, removes his last measure of karma and invokes him to remember his past life. Lahiri vowed to become Babaji’s disciple once again and spread the message of kriya yoga as a householder. In the remainder of his years, Lahiri initiated hundreds of students into kriya yoga, at least 14 of which went on to become teachers of the kriya yoga tradition. Lahiri always said that by simply repeating Babaji name with reverence one receives a spiritual blessing. I can contest to that.
