The Institute of Sacred Music: Celebrating 50 Years at Yale

A half-century ago, the Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) was established through a gift from the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation of Columbus, Indiana. After starting out with one administrator, three faculty, and ten students, the Institute is now a thriving international community of well over a hundred faculty, students, and fellows who—from a breathtaking diversity of perspectives and disciplines—explore, consider, and foster the ways that people have manifested their faith through worship, music, and other forms of artistic expression.

Learn more in this video about the impact of the ISM throughout its fifty years at Yale and join us for one (or all!) of the fiftieth anniversary concerts, which include a gospel concert honoring Richard Smallwood on April 19, a Festal Evensong on April 26, a performance of Bach’s Mass in B Minor with Yale Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415 on April 27, and the “All Creation Sings” Hymn Festival on May 5.
