Wild Horses "Sun and Storm"

Wild Horses of SE Oregon

The high desert has it's share of unexpected thunderstorms. A mile high mountain, creates it's own weather systems. Our last day out there in September, I woke up at 5am to the pounding of heavy rain drops on the roof. I got so excited because I had wanted to photo mustangs in the rain. Got breakfast, grabbed gear and went to find rain-soaked mustangs.

Intermittent sun and clouds when we got there. The sun felt very warm, yet when the clouds obscured the sun, you felt the cold. This only meant thunderstorms, as we watched a big cell build right overhead.

The mustangs seemed to know, and turned their big hind ends to the cold winds, as they waited it out. When the sun settled on their backs, they seemed to sigh, enjoying the brief warmth. The thunder rolled.

Jack and Jester stood side by side waiting it out. Jester, on the other side of Jack made me think of a reborn Spitfire, standing next to this great stallion. Muddy from a good roll on the desert dirt, makes them no less amazing. In fact they were more beautiful in an uninhibited way. The loss of Spitfire has left a hole, but being filled, watching his colt grow along side Jack.
When we finished photographing, we drove out and away from Steens, and when I looked back at the mountain in the distance, I saw the massive thunderhead right over the whole mountain itself.

Any given day, my mind drifts to the high desert where the rains brought out the pungent smells of the sage I sat next to, taking in all the wild elements.
