A South African-made Netflix series just broke into the platform's global most-watched list. The Polygamist, based on the 2012 novel by Zimbabwean-born, South Africa-based author Sue Nyathi, has racked up over 159 million hours viewed in under a month since its debut, more than 16.5 million individual views, making it the 58th most-watched series on Netflix worldwide since January 2026. Nyathi began writing at 20, while working full-time in finance, and only left her finance career years after The Polygamist became a bestseller. Her later novels have gone on to be longlisted for the Dublin Literary Award and the Barry Ronge Fiction Prize.
