The Landsgemeinde or is a public, non-secret ballot voting system operating by majority rule, which constitutes one of the oldest forms of direct democracy.

Still at use – in a few places – at the subnational political level in Switzerland, it was formerly practiced in eight cantons. For practical reasons, the Landsgemeinde has been abolished at the cantonal level in all but two cantons where it still holds the highest political authority: Appenzell Innerrhoden and Glarus.

The canton of Glarus is a canton in east central Switzerland. The capital is Glarus.
It is the canton's highest legislative body.

Glarus introduced measures to encourage participation at the Landsgemeinde. In 2007, participation was extended to citizens aged 16 and older and participants can use all public transports of the canton for free.

In front of an impressive natural backdrop, the traditional rural community gathers in the open air every first Sunday in May on the Zaunplatz in Glarus. It not only attracts thousands of voters, but also a number of onlookers, tourists and television teams from home and abroad.

The Landsgemeinde is the highest political body in the canton. Once a year the voters meet to settle all political affairs on the ring.

It only carries out a few elections: Landammann and Provincial Governor from among the members of the government council elected at the ballot box, the judges.
Only people with voting rights have access to the ring . (The voting card must be presented to the supervisory bodies).

Votes are cast by holding up the voting card. The Landammann determines the majority by estimating. In doubtful cases, it calls in four members of the government council for advice and then makes final and final decisions
In the Glarner Landsgemeinde, those entitled to vote have the right to “advise, reduce and increase”. This means that you can ask to speak and request changes to any business transaction. Applications for postponement, rejection or rejection are also possible.
