China says it opposes Taiwan's bid to join CPTPP trade pact

China has said it opposes Taiwan joining a major Trans-Pacific trade deal, just days after Beijing said it wanted to become a member of the same agreement. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) is the region's biggest free-trade pact and accounts for around 13.5% of the global economy. Both Taiwan and Beijing must receive unanimous approvals from all 11 members in order to join the trade body. According to official estimates, Taiwan's entry to the CPTPP would boost the island's GDP by more than two percentage points.
