NASA almost used Saturn V engines for SLS! Are the new Shuttle engines the right choice?

SLS uses very little groundbreaking technology in the overall design, especially when it comes to propulsion. But, 10 years ago, NASA had contracted Dynetics to build a new Saturn V F1 engine for SLS. What happened? And are the new RS25s really that good?
