How Can I Spot an Ectopic Pregnancy With Ultrasound?

Ectopic pregnancy is very dangerous for both the mother and the child and should be recognized as early as possible. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the fetus is implanted outside the uterine cavity. Most ectopic pregnancies can be detected using a pelvic exam and ultrasound.

In this video, Patricia Koster, AMS will show you how to look for an ectopic pregnancy using ultrasound and how not to miss it. Koster will also go over the scan protocol and will teach you how to scan the full length from left to right and from cranial to caudal. The scan protocol is important to ensure that you are imaging the entire abdomen and looking for a fetal heart rate. Next, this video will show you two ultrasound images of an ectopic pregnancy. The first photo shows a closed endometrium and no signs of pregnancy. The right images show an ultrasound image of the the ovary with a fetus with a fetal heart rate. This is an ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy symptoms include severe pain and bleeding in the woman and the fetus cannot survive. Patricia Koster, AMS emphasizes the important of looking through the entire abdomen and making sure that there is no fetal heart rate in the ovary.
