Qtile Keybindings And Groups - Gettting Started With Qtile #qtile

We are going to configure keybindings and groups in Qtile. Qtile is a simple, lightweight and extensible tiling window manager for GNU/Linux that is written and configurable with python. Both X and Wayland are supported by qtile. This makes qtile much more accessible than other tiling window managers because more people are fimiliar with python. Even if you are not familiar with python, it is an easy language to pick up. Qtile also provides great documentation so you can quickly start hacking on it. Qtile also has great built-in components like extensions, hooks, layouts and widgets. If you are not using a display manager, qtile can be started using .xinitrc by putting "qtile start" at the end of the file.

Qtile keybindings are configured using Key objects that can be given arguments that will define your keybinding. Groups (or workspaces) are configured with Group objects that also accepts argument to define a group. Both keybindings and groups in Qtile are added to a python list called keys and groups respectively.

Fun fact:
The "Q" in Qtile has no relation to Qt or anything else for that matter. The developer simply searched for the first letter that wasn't registered in a domain name with "tile" as a suffix.

Installation:

Arch:
sudo pacman -S qtile

Fedora:
sudo dnf -y install qtile

Debian and deravites:
sudo apt install qtile

FreeBSD:
pkg install qtile

Commands:
Xephyr -br -ac -noreset -screen 1280x720 :1 &
DISPLAY=:1 qtile start
