Queen Nzinga: The Diplomat Who Fought an Empire

In 17th-century Central Africa (modern-day Angola), the Portuguese Empire was expanding its brutal slave trade. In 1622, Nzinga Mbande of Ndongo arrived to negotiate peace with the Portuguese governor. When he tried to humiliate her, she performed one of history's greatest power moves.

After seizing the throne, Queen Nzinga spent the next 35 years as a military genius and master of guerrilla warfare, successfully leading her people against the full might of the Portuguese. She forged a powerful new kingdom in Matamba and became the central figure of African resistance to colonial power.

In this video, I explore the life of the Warrior Queen who was never defeated, forcing Portugal to recognize her as a sovereign ruler before she died free. Who is your favorite historical leader? Let me know in the comments!
