Living Earth Virtual Festival: Message from Notah Begay III
Notah Begay III (Navajo/San Felipe/Isleta), the only full-blooded Native American to ever play on the PGA Tour, was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1990 Notah began his collegiate career at Stanford University where he finished with a degree in Economics and became a 3-time All-American while leading Stanford Golf to a National Championship in 1994.
In 1998 Notah shot the first “59” in the history of the Korn Ferry tour and later that year earned fulltime PGA Tour status. Notah enjoyed a 12-year career that included 4 PGA tour wins and a spot on the 2000 Presidents Cup team where he partnered with longtime friend Tiger Woods to contribute 3-points toward an American team victory.
In 2012, Notah became part of the NBC-Golf Channel broadcast team where his role as a golf analyst allows him to provide insight into golf’s biggest events around the world. Notah also created the NB3 Foundation which focuses on ensuring that Native American children achieve their full potential. Notah and wife Apryl have three children and reside in Albuquerque.
Over the span of an extremely gratifying career, Notah has been named one of the Top 100 Sports Educators in the world by the Institute for International Sport and in 2009 Golf World named Begay “Innovator of the Year”. Lastly, in 2014 Stanford University recognized Notah’s career achievements by inducting him into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame alongside teammate Tiger Woods.
