How to ruin a perfectly good landing...
I'm the first to admit when I've made a mistake, and here I made a couple. This is what happens when you form habits - in this case over-reliance on the wheelbrake to stop the glider. Of the two Jantars at GCWA I usually fly the other one, VH-GEE, which is fitted with a drum brake. This glider, VH-IZS, has been modified with a much more powerful disc brake. At the end of the groundroll I squeezed the brake a bit too hard and, aided by a gentle breeze that had backed around from the North to the West and become a tailwind, I pitched the nose down into the runway as I came to a stop. No damage as such, just a paint scrape that was easily repaired a couple of weeks later, but it rattled my teeth somewhat...
Lessons I learned...
1 - Always get a windcheck, even in very light conditions, and change runway accordingly.
2 - Apply the wheel brake judiciously and sparingly. Let the glider roll to a stop, there's no need to pull up right on the launch point.
