Lavrion Greece-Ancient mineshaft descent for scientific purposes.
DISCLAIMER: The people involved in descending in this mineshaft are both experienced, trained and certified cavers with knowledge of rope techniques and safety.I do not suggest that anyone without proper training tries this.
Lavrion has a very rich geological and archeological history.Almost 15% percent of the worlds known minerals (about 550 out of the 5500 in total) can be found in a rather small area and new minerals are being found every year. The earth in Lavrion has been mined since antiquity. As such,it is the perfect ground for scientific research.A friend and caver who is also an undergraduate student in the geology dept of the university of Patras, asked me for some help in going down an ancient mineshaft,in order to get stromatography and other measurements that would help him with his thesis research for his undergraduate degree.I was happy to help,so him, together with a friend from Lavrio who also has deep knowledge of the area and a couple of geology professors and scientists,as well as a 3d mapping technician,we all went to Lavrio and this is the footage from that effort in its entirety.(Hence the long video)This is the first time that images from the inside of that mining well and tunnels are published.
The exploratory team were the following:
Kokkalas Sotiris(Associate professor, General,Marine geology and Geodynamics University of Patras),
Michalis Fitros(MSc Geologist-Mineralogist), Panos karoutsos(Geology undegraduate student University of Patras & Caver),Yannis Psaltakis(3D mapping operator -Landmark Loutridis Co.),
Dimitris Sirigos("Lavriostone"),George Kafantaris(Computer Networks Eng.-Photographer-caver)
Special thanks to "Landmark Loutridis Co" for the generous offering of their equipment and their help in this effort.Thank you!
For merchandise inspired by my mineral macro photography in the countless tunnels of Lavrion, you may visit: www.jestercats.com
