In the latest film in our series with TV presenter Kate Humble, she visits Bigton in Shetland's South Mainland to discover how community spirit, creativity and a willingness to support new ideas are helping shape the future of this small village.

She spends time with Gus Dow, a school janitor by weekday and co-founder of the Bigton Weekend Bakery at weekends. Originally from Edinburgh, Gus taught himself to bake through online videos before turning his passion into a successful local venture. He explains how moving to Shetland gave him the confidence to try something new – and how a community willing to embrace new ideas helped make it possible.

Kate also meets Sarah and Alex Green, who relocated to Shetland to raise their family and establish a new coffee business. They share why Shetland is an inspiring place to start a business, how local support and grant funding helped them take the next step, and why communities like Bigton are so welcoming to people with the right energy and ideas.

The heart and soul of the community is Hymhus, a former kirk transformed into a thriving community hub. Home to events, exhibitions, live music, the Bigton Weekend Bakery and a growing cafe venture, it has become a place where people come together from all over Shetland to socialise.
