Young Australians are turning to self-managed super funds
Latest research from CoreData reveals a pivotal shift underway in Australia’s superannuation landscape. SMSFs now account for around one quarter of all super assets, collectively valued at more than $1 trillion, reinforcing their growing significance within the system.
While SMSF ownership remains concentrated among older Australians, sentiment across the broader marker presents a more complex picture. The switching intent among those that still remain in the cohort of APRA-regulated super continues to rise.
This willingness to explore alternatives is most notable among younger cohorts. Members aged 29 and below demonstrate the highest likelihood of switching. This behaviour indicates a potential generational shift in future SMSF demand, with younger Australians emerging as a key cohort of strategic relevance.
For funds, these trends highlight both risk and opportunity. Monitoring switching behaviours and understanding how member preferences evolve across age groups will be critical to maintaining relevance and long-term member engagement.
