3D Printing Technology Aids Separation of Conjoined Twins in Shanghai, China
Surgeons at the Fudan University Children’s Hospital in Shanghai separated conjoined twins with the help of 3D technology Tuesday.
The doctors printed 3D models of the twins’ connected parts that they used when preparing for the surgery.
The three-month-old sisters, who were born in Ganzhou City of Jiangxi Province, were connected at the hip and lower spine and shared parts of their spinal canal and rectum.
The five hour separation surgery, which started at 10:20, included reconstruction of the twins’ anuses, perinea and rectal muscles.
Zheng Shan, vice president of the hospital, said the operation was made difficult by the need to separate the twins’ nervous systems without injury and ensure normal function of their reproductive and digestive organs.
The surgery was successful, however, and the twins are now under observation in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
They will be discharged in two weeks if there are no post-operation complications.
