4K The longest Jetty in South Australia - Port Germein Jetty
Port Germein, located in South Australia, is home to the longest wooden jetty in the South Australia.
Constructed in 1881, the Port Germein Jetty was initially 5,459 feet long (approximately 1,680 meters), making it the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere at the time.
Goods were transported via bullock drays through the scenic Port Germein Gorge from the Willochra Plains and beyond.
Despite severe weather damage over the years, the jetty has been restored multiple times, now measuring 1,532 meters. It was built by John Wishart using local sugar and red gum trees.
The stones and red bricks strewn along the sides of the jetty are remnants of ballast discarded by ships loading at the port.
Rare Maritime Clock: Originally located near the entrance to the Port Pirie shipping channel at Cockle Spit, this clock faced tide gauge features a float attached to a pulley wheel that rises and falls with the tide. A gas light behind the perspex face allowed sailors to read it at night.
Metal Sculptures and Mosaics: Four metal sculptures at the beginning of the jetty, sculpted by Max Newbery, add to the site’s charm.
