My first travel adventure of 2018 was an epic, 3-week trip through India back in January. During those 3 weeks, I fell in love with everything about this country, so I decided bookend my year with another Indian excursion in November!
I knew I’d have to do a lot of walking to get around Pune, the first city on my trip, which I knew would be a problem for my low arches. So I partnered up with Dr. Scholl’s see if they could help me out. They sent me some insoles, and I figured the best way to test them is to wear them as I hunt down the best food the city has to offer. Here are my top 10 Indian street food dishes in Pune!
-Egg Bhurji (Vohuman Café)
Egg bhurji is a spicy, Indian, scrambled egg dish that contains caramelized onions, green serrano pepper, red bell pepper, tomatoes, turmeric, and more. It was perfectly balanced and bursting with signature Indian flavors I will never forget.
-Keema Pao (Good Luck Café)
Keema Pao is a popular dish made of minced, curried goat; onions, tomatoes, green chilis, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and more. Each bite was an explosion of flavor in my mouth that made my taste buds go haywire and crave even more!
-Masal Puri (JM Road)
Masal Puri is a snack that is made up of hollow, unleavened, deep-fried bread balls called puris, a hot masala gravy containing puffed rice, vegetables, and spices. The vegetables added a freshness to a crunchy, flavorful dish that wasn’t too hot.
-Sponge Dosa (JM Road)
The sponge dosa is an Indian pancake with an airy, spongy texture. It was served with a tropical mint-coconut chutney and a very spicy tomato-garlic chutney. The light texture and incredible chutneys made this my favorite dosa I’ve ever eaten!
-Tawa Pulao (JM Road)
Tawa Pulao is a spice-filled rice dish containing green peas, onions, tomatoes, and bhaji masala powder. This is one of the most mouthwatering rice dishes I’ve ever eaten, almost like an Indian take on Chinese fried rice.
-Misal Pav (Bedekar Tea Stall)
Misal Pav is made up of a spicy, moth bean-based curry called misal, potato, fried lentils, chickpeas, fried onion, lemon, coriander, and more. It’s moist, crunchy, and spicy, and also becomes sweet and tangy with the gravy, which perfectly balances the spiciness and makes this a mouthwatering, one-of-a-kind dish.
-Masala Chai (roadside)
Masala Chai is a creamy black tea that contains aromatic Indian herbs and spices along with milk, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. It’s creamy, spicy, and peppery, and is served scalding hot. Just don’t burn your mouth on it!
-Vada Pav (roadside)
Vada Pav is usually a masala-soaked bun that contains a fried potato fritter, but this one contained a delicious mint chutney instead of masala and was served with lots of raw onions. The mint chutney was an interesting and flavorful twist, and the potato fritter and bun were delicious! One of my favorite veg dishes in India!
-Tandoori Chai (roadside)
Tandoori Chai is a milky, unique Indian tea. After a clay pot or kulhad is heated in an oven called a tandoor and placed in a bowl, half-cooked chai is poured inside it, where it boils and bubbles over the sides and fills the entire bowl, which infuses the tea with tandoori flavor. The chai is creamy, earthy, and smoky, and is absolutely divine!
-Bahubali Thali (House of Paratha)
Bahubali Thali at House of Paratha is the biggest Thali in Pune, This massive dish contains a 20 to 22 inch-wide paratha that is stuffed with vegetables, nuts, and cheese. Alongside the paratha were various vegetables, breads, desserts, drinks, and sides. It’s spicy, earthy, nutty, and tropical, and the textures range from crispy to crunchy to creamy.
After two days of exploring Pune on foot, I can honestly say that my new Dr. Scholl’s insoles were a godsend for my feet. They felt way better than usual when I do lots of walking, and I highly recommend Dr. Scholl’s insoles to anyone who has to spend a lot of time on their feet. I could not have made it through these 48 hours without them!
