7 Sequels to NES Games You Missed | Friday Night Arcade

Let's take a look at 7 NES Game sequels that you (probably) missed out on the first time around on this edition of Friday Night Arcade! These games either ended up never getting a release out of Japan or getting a release on an entirely different console.

BEYOND SHADOWGATE - Turbografx 16
Here's one I never knew about. I was aware of Shadowgate 64 as well as the Shadowgate modern remake that came out recently, but I never knew about Beyond Shadowgate - a release for the Turbografx 16 CD-ROM add on. This sequel swapped out the first person interface for a third person view but maintained the point and click gameplay while continuing the Shadowgate story. They also added in voice acting with the additional CD storage space. This game was also developed by ICOM Simulations just like the others in the series.

GRADIUS II- Famicom
We got hosed on this one. The Japanese only Famicom release never saw an official US release which is unfortunate because the cartridge contained a special chipset that really pushed the Famicom/NES to its limits. It's too bad we didn't get an official release of this until much later on the Wii Console.

SUPER MARIO BROS 2. - Famicom Disk System
It's no secret that the US SMB2 release was a repackage of Doki Doki Panic, but have you ever actually sat down and played the REAL Super Mario Bros 2? They watered it down a bit for the Virtual Console release as well as the SMB All Stars release, but the original Super Mario Bros. 2 is a surreal and maddening experience. It's crazy seeing a game that looks and feels exactly like the original Super Mario Bros but so much more brutal. The developers seemed to be taking a certain glee in making you look foolish.

DUCKTALES 2 - NES
Not necessarily a huge secret, but it was released so late in the NES's lifespan that unfortunately it few under the radar for a lot of folks. It sells for upwards of $150 or more on the secondary market compared to the first one which typically goes for $15 or so. The steep price makes it a lot less accessible for most people who want to take a stab at it in the modern era.

POWER PUNCH II - NES
This was originally supposed to be an official sequel to Mike Tyson's Punch Out. It would have been called Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch, but when Nintendo saw how terrible the final product they chose not to publish it. Mike Tyson was also removed and swapped out for "Mark Tyler" who totally is not Mike Tyson but looks exactly like Mike Tyson. It was later published by a different company and they probably should have passed too. This game is pretty awful. You play as Mike ... uh... I mean Mark... and fight aliens in the world's most uninteresting boxing competition. This was a real NES game that actually existed.

BLASTER MASTER 2 - Sega Genesis
Had no idea this existed. It's not my favorite iteration of the series, but it's a Blaster Master game in 16-bit and you can play it. Goes for relatively cheap too. I'm not a fan of the music compared to the awe-inspiring 8-bit soundtrack from the original.

ADVENTURE ISLAND IV - Famicom
This was the final officially licensed release for the Famicom. Unfortunately it was released so late in the life cycle that it never saw a release in the United States so you missed out on yet another awesome Adventure Island game from Hudson. Pretty much the same as the others but that's a good thing.

Honorable Mention but I ran out of time goes to Deja Vu II: Lost in Lost Vegas which saw a release on computer and eventually on Game Boy Color. Looks and plays just about like the first one. Wish we would have got this on NES.
