8 YEARS in a CAGE leaves dog with HORRIBLE SCOLIOSIS and ARTHRITIS! (RESCUE DOG!)

Today we have AVA, a Yorkshire Terrier, that was kept in a cage at a puppy mill for 8 years. She never had the experience of her paws making contact with the earth, and touching grass until Jennifer and Christina rescued her. She has debilitating arthritis, scoliosis, and degenerative joint disease, which was accelerated by living in a cage 24 hours per day for 8 years. When an animal or human doesn't get a chance to move their bodies, the joints will begin to calcify within weeks.
Jennifer, came to my Brooklyn apartment on Sunday with a few of her medically challenged dogs that she helped rescue with the Founder Christina Chavis. Together they operate an amazing organization: Animal Rescue "R" Us (ARRUS), in New Jersey. It is a non-profit 501c3. Run 100% on charitable donations.
ARRUS is known for their willingness to accept dogs with special medical challenges.

CHRISTINA CHAVIS's STORY:
Christina Chavis founded Animal Rescue ‘R’ Us, a non-profit 501(c)-3 rescue organization, in 2009. Although she was heavily involved in rescue prior to 2009, she was determined to form a rescue that would be different from all the rest – a rescue where no pup is left behind, no matter what their circumstance.

Christina is known in the community (and by other local rescues) as the woman who will turn away no animal in need.

Specializing in dogs that are most in need of rescue, Christina has dedicated her life to saving the unwanted no matter what obstacles may need to be overcome. Knowing the ins and outs of animal rescue, Christina knows far too well that black dogs or senior dogs are the first to be turned away and euthanized. She knows that a puppy born with a deformity, or that is born deaf, blind or has a missing limb, has a small chance of rescue.

Christina holds a deep love and respect for all animals, and wants nothing more than to give them all a chance to live fulfilled lives. As a single mother, Christina has taught her young daughter the same love and respect for animals. Christina continues to educate younger generations about the prevention of animal cruelty and the importance of protecting those who are unable to protect themselves.

In 2015, Christina was honored with a Certificate of Commendation as a 2015 Women’s History Month Honoree for Bergen County, New Jersey for her work as an animal rescuer. But the honors that Christina has received do not compare to the honor and pride she feels every time she sees one of her rescues adopted into a loving forever home. There is no greater reward.


Christina’s enormous heart, courage and dedication to the welfare of animals has been the foundation and the legacy of Animal Rescue ‘R’ Us.
JENNIFER LaROSA'S STORY:

After suffering a personal tragedy in September of 2013, Jennifer LaRosa learned about Animal Rescue “R” Us through Facebook and began volunteering at adoption events. Shortly thereafter, she began fostering, while secretly looking to add her to pack. As suspected, her first foster experience ended with a #FosterFail, but Jennifer and her husband, Joe, continued to welcome other foster pups into their home.

Through this experience, she and director, Christina Chavis, formed a wonderful friendship. They eventually decided to divide up the roles and responsibilities within the rescue and Jennifer LaRosa was named the Adoption/Foster Coordinator of the organization. Since she and Christina share similar values, it was a natural transition. Together, the girls have worked tirelessly to save hundreds of animals from euthanasia.

They are passionate about rescuing pregnant females, moms and babies, special needs pups, and seniors. They are well-known in the rescue world for never turning down an animal in need and they are also well respected in the community.
