Helping Fish Cross the Road in Banff National Park

In Banff National Park, wildlife structures help animals cross the highway safely. But did you know that some underpasses are used by fish as well? Fish such as Bull trout, a species of special concern in the park, now swim freely -- just as freely as the millions of vehicles that pass this special location each year.

When the Trans-Canada Highway was twinned near Yoho National Park, Bath Creek was carefully re-routed and an old culvert was replaced with a new underpass. The underpass itself is an extraordinary structure that must support a four-lane divided highway above and a river below, in every kind of weather. It was built to last, using a series of precast, bottomless, concrete arches. The arches are overfilled, so they require little maintenance and have lower life-cycle costs because there are no bridge decks or joints to maintain.
