Eid-ul-Adha in Pakistan: Religious Duty or a Billion-Rupee Informal Economy?

In this episode of The Public Forum, Javed Khan Jadoon discusses the religious, welfare, and economic dimensions of Eid-ul-Adha. The conversation highlights how Eid is not only a religious obligation in Pakistan but also one of the largest annual informal economic activities in the country.

Last year, economic activity during Eid was estimated between PKR 539 to 752 billion, involving a massive transfer of wealth from urban to rural areas. Millions of tons of meat were distributed, and more than 7 million animal hides were collected, providing significant support to livestock farmers, the leather industry, and local businesses.

Experts suggest that this seasonal cycle plays a crucial role in strengthening rural livelihoods, food distribution systems, and export-linked industries in Pakistan’s economy.
