Canon - Pachelbel arr. Marlatt
The Tomball Memorial High School Saxophone Quartet performs Pachelbel's Canon, arranged by David Marlatt. This performance was a part of the group's send-off concert in preparation for their performance at the 2020 Music For All National Chamber Music Festival.
Maxwell Gray - Alto Saxophone I
Benjamin Bourg - Alto Saxophone II
Blaise Alfredson - Tenor Saxophone
Amber Wigle - Baritone Saxophone
Canon is an accompanied canon by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel from his Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo. Neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition are known, and the oldest surviving manuscript copy of the piece dates from the 19th century. Pachelbel's Canon, like his other works, although popular during his lifetime, went out of style, and remained obscure for centuries. A 1968 arrangement and recording by the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra gained popularity over the next decade. By the early 1980s its presence as background music was inescapable. From the 1970s to the late 2010s, elements of the piece, especially its chord progression, were used in a variety of pop songs.
Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) has made numerous valuable contributions to the development of the chorale prelude and fugue, earning him a place among the most important composers of the middle Baroque era.
